Steven Spielberg has just entered the very exclusive club of EGOT, this circle of artists having won the four major awards of the American entertainment industry: Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Awards.

The filmmaker won his ticket thanks to a victory at the Grammy Awards last night, in the category of best musical film, for the documentary Music by John Williams. A tribute to his lifelong accomplice, the composer behind some of the most iconic scores in the history of cinema.

With this Grammy, Steven Spielberg joins an extremely rare list of achievements: only 20 artists have achieved this feat across cinema, television, music and theater before him.

Available on Disney+, Music by John Williams traces the career of the legendary composer and his long-term collaboration with Spielberg, which began Sugarland Express and extended on monuments like Jaws, Schindler’s List or even We must save Private Ryan.

In a press release, he welcomed this recognition: “Thank you to all the Grammy voters, whose recognition of ‘Music by John Williams’ means so much to me and our team Amblin, Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey, and congratulations to our partners at Imagine and the Walt Disney Company. This recognition obviously has a very special value, because it validates what I have known for more than 50 years: John Williams’ influence on culture and music is immeasurable, and his talent and legacy are unparalleled. I am proud to be associated with Laurent’s magnificent film.”

On the Oscars side, the director notably displays two Best Director statuettes on the clock for Schindler’s List And We must save Private Ryan. Moreover, Spielberg could even win a new Oscar for Best Film in a few days thanks to the Shakespearean drama Hamnet by Chloé Zhao, which he produced.

On the Emmy Awards side, the filmmaker has several statuettes to his credit thanks to Band of Brothers (among others).

On the Tony Awards side, it’s a little more vague, but he does have a statuette for his work on the Best Musical of 2022, as producer of A Strange Loopunder the name of the group of producers credited (“et al” mention).

Thus, officially, Steven Spielberg joins the very closed circle of EGOT and strengthens the legend even further. To date, EGOT club members include: Richard Rodgers, Helen Hayes, Rita Moreno, John Gielgud, Audrey Hepburn, Marvin Hamlisch, Jonathan Tunick, Mel Brooks, Mike Nichols, Whoopi Goldberg, Scott Rudin, Robert Lopez, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Tim Rice, John Legend, Alan Menken, Jennifer Hudson, Viola Davis, Elton John, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.
