Who is who in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms? The Character Guide
What is the connection between Egg and Daenerys? Between the good Prince Baelor and Rhaenyra? We go back through the Targaryen family tree to better set the scene for the Game of Thrones prequel series.
King Daeron II Targaryen
He is the reigning king during the events of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Daeron II, known as “Daeron the Good”, is the 12th Targaryen on the Iron Throne. Unlike many Targaryens famous for their madness or brutality, Daeron II favors diplomacy and wisdom. Son of Aegon IV and half-brother of Daemon Blackfyre, he pacified Dorne and unified Westeros. He is the father of Baelor and Maekar. But the king does not appear in season 1 of the HBO series.
Prince Baelor Targaryen (Bertie Carvel)
He is the eldest in the family. So the heir to the throne. A model of nobility and virtue, he is also the Hand of the King and therefore the ruler of the 7 Kingdoms. Great-great grandson of Rhaenyra, the heroine of House of the Dragon. Baelor is not in the direct lineage leading to Daenerys. He is Egg’s uncle.
Prince Maekar Targaryen (Sam Spruell)
The king’s second son, Maekar is Egg’s father and therefore, factually, Daenerys’ great-great grandfather! Warrior and future king of Westeros, he embodies the serious and disciplined Targaryen line, preparing Egg to reign. Note that he is also the father of the very old blind Maester Aemon (Peter Vaughan), seen in season 1 of Game of Thrones.
Prince Aerion Targaryen (Finn Bennett)
Maekar’s second son and Egg’s older brother, Aerion is impulsive and dangerous. His unstable character is reminiscent of certain Targaryens from House of the Dragon. Although he is not a direct ancestor of Daenerys, he illustrates the internal tensions of the royal family before the extinction of the dragons.
Prince Daeron Targaryen (Henry Ashton)
Maekar’s eldest, often described as frivolous or weak, this other great-great-grandson of Rhaenyra is nicknamed the Drunkard. It’s him who tries to escape the Ashen Tournament out of cowardice and gives the baby to Dunk in episode 1.
Prince Aegon “Egg” Targaryen (Dexter Sol Ansell)
The young hero of the series is therefore the last son of Maekar, and therefore the grandson of the current King, Daeron II. Also a direct descendant of Rhaenyra. He will be the father of Jaehaerys II and therefore the great-grandfather of Daenerys. His youth with Dunk shows a humanized Targaryen, far from the plots and drama of House of the Dragon.
Ser Duncan “Dunk” the Tall (Peter Claffey)
Humble and upright traveling knight, not noble by birth. He becomes the master of the squire Egg and influences the training of the future king. Dunk is not Targaryen, but his role recalls the loyal and courageous knights who shape the history of Westeros, far from royal intrigues.
Ser Lyonel Baratheon (Daniel Ings)
Lord of Storm’s End and head of House Baratheon at this time, Lyonel is loyal and chivalrous. He is the great-grandfather of Robert Baratheon, showing the greatness of the Baratheons before their rebellion that overthrew the Targaryens in Game of Thrones.
Ser Steffon Fossoway (Edward Ashley)
A knight and heir to House Fossoway of Cider Hall during the reign of Daeron II, Steffon competes in the tournament at Ashford Meadow. It represents the minor nobility loyal to the Targaryens and illustrates chivalric life outside the royal court, bringing context and depth to Westeros. Raymun Fossoway, his cousin, is his squire.
Ser Manfred Dondarrion (Daniel Monks)
Representative of a chivalrous house and event manager, Manfred Dondarrion is a knight, son of Lord Dondarrion, Lord of Blackhaven.
Tanselle (Tanzyn Crawford)
A mysterious puppeteer from Dorne, she is not noble but shows the cultural diversity and popular interactions in Westeros.
