César 2026: the coronation of L’Attachement and Jim Carrey’s speech in French (winners)
Jim Carrey’s Honorary César marked this ceremony masterfully hosted by Benjamin Lavernhe, where the rewards were equally shared.
If we had to choose a winner after this 51st Caesar ceremony, it would perhaps be Attachment. With the awards for best film, best adapted screenplay and best supporting actress for Vimala Pons, Carine Tardieu’s feature film leaves with a great harvest of awards.
The most named film, New wavedid not stand out with four awards: best direction for Richard Linklater, best photography, best editing and best costumes. We could also cite the three prices ofArco (including the best animated film). But in reality, the real winner was the cinema, and the Caesar ceremony.
We knew that this year the Césars suffered from the absence of major popular films, where in 2025 The Count of Monte Cristo, Love phew Or With fanfare had filled up with entries and nominations.
The Academy and Canal Plus, the event’s broadcaster, had therefore relied heavily on Benjamin Lavernhe, called upon to take on the solo role of master of ceremonies, after several experiences of collegial presentations. And it was a great success. The actor, a resident of the Comédie Française, delivered an incredible show to kick off the evening, paying tribute to Jim Carrey in a crazy performance inspired by The Mask.
Supported by his remitters and overflowing with generosity, Lavernhe set the tone for an evening dedicated to sharing and kindness. No film crushed the competition, few left empty-handed: best actor for Laurent Lafitte (The richest woman in the world), best actress for Léa Drucker (File 137) and best supporting actor for Pierre Lottin (The Stranger).
Even Franck Dubosc was finally entitled to his real Caesar, for the screenplay ofA bear in the Jura. “It’s huge“, he commented in a nod to last year’s “Cesario” sketch, the mini-Cesar for “those who did not get the Caesar“.
The 2026 Césars will also be remembered for the honorary César of Jim Carrey (introduced by Michel Gondry) who surprised the audience by delivering a speech entirely in French. We didn’t understand everything, but the emotion was at its peak, especially when the Canadian actor mentioned his French origins to underline the importance of this moment for him.
Jim Carrey seemed genuinely delighted to be there. And we too to attend this beautiful evening, certainly a little too long, but where the speeches are not cut off, and even the “small” prizes are entitled to a real moment of glory.
