“Why did Streisand do it?” : Jane Fonda is surprised by the tribute to Redford at the Oscars
The actress obviously did not appreciate seeing her colleague singing on stage at the Dolby Theater to pay tribute to the memory of the deceased actor.
Emotional moment, Sunday evening, during the Oscars ceremony, when Barbra Streisand who paid tribute to Robert Redford during the In Memoriam segment.
The American legend came to sing The Way we Weretaken from their major film Our Most Beautiful Years (1973). A lovely suspended moment that moved the entire room at the Dolby Theater. Well almost everything… Jane Fonda didn’t really like the performance, believing that she should have paid tribute to Redford instead. Asked about it at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party by Entertainment Tonight (see below), Jane Fonda first reacted to the segment on the disappearance of Diane Keaton, her co-star in Book Club (2018) and its 2023 sequel: “His passing really upset me. We lost a lot of talent this year…”
And continue with mischief:
“Besides, I would like to know why it was Streisand who was there to pay tribute to Redford? She only made one film with him. I made four! I have more to say about Robert than she does!”
When asked about her memories of filming with Redford, Fonda joked: “I’ve always been in love with him.”
Robert Redford, who died on September 16, 2025 at the age of 89, shared the screen with Jane Fonda in four films: The Merciless Pursuit (1966), Barefoot in the park (1967), The Electric Rider (1979) and Our souls at night (2017).
