Marion Cotillard and Walton Goggins star in a biblical film
The French actress is back on the other side of the Atlantic.
After Bethlehem, The Operative, Our secrets or even Sympathy for the DevilIsraeli-American filmmaker Yuval Adler returns with a feature film inspired by the writings ofOld Testamentreports Variety.
Didactic poem, the Book of Jobone of Books of Tanakh and theOld Testamentnarrates the battle between God and Satan, who argue over Job’s faith.
The director uses this fable as a backdrop to reveal the problems of a marriage on the rocks. A couple of artists, played by Marion Cotillard and Walton Goggins, decide to stage the poignant and immersive story of Job, a man whose faith in God is tested by extreme suffering – he loses his wealth, his children and his health – but he remains faithful.
The film will therefore alternate between the 12th century BC and 2025… A bold choice that Adler justifies by the timeless dimension of the story: “We want the film to feel both timeless and urgent — like the Book of Job itself.”
“As their private lives become intertwined with their performance, an on-set standoff raises an unexpected question: Who gets to play God?“, indicates the very first synopsis also specifying that the film juxtaposes the story of “the ancient wager between God and Satan with the modern outcome of a marriage under pressure“. A project reminiscent of the Claude Lelouch fresco, The Beautiful Storywe find Béatrice Dalle and Gérard Lanvin caught in a story between the 90s and the era of Jesus Christ.
Recently, we saw Marion Cotillard (Oscar for best actress for The Kid) in Lucile Hadžihalilović’s tale, The Ice Towerwhile Walton Goggins was nominated at the Golden Globes for Best Supporting Actor in a Series for The White Lotus. This is the first time that the two actors are together.
The interpreter of There Kid is therefore back in an American feature film, three years after his role in the biopic dedicated to Lee Miller with Kate Winslet. In the meantime, she appeared in season 4 of the series The Morning Show (2025).
Concerning the choice of casting, the director explains that the two actors carry the film: “Together, Marion and Walton will elevate this story beyond anything I could have imagined on the page.”
Previously, Yuval Adler directed German actress Diane Kruger in the film The Operative.
The filming date of Job has not yet been announced.
