Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve relish their return to Cannes in the new Cristian Mungiu

After A Different Man, the two actors found themselves starring in Fjord, in competition for the Palme d’Or.

In 2024, Sebastian Stan discovered the Cannes festival thanks to The Apprenticewhere he played a rising Donald Trump for Ali Abbasi. A performance that left its mark and reminded us that the Marvel star could shine outside of superhero cinema.

Two years later, he is already back on the Croisette, and once again in a film in competition for the Palme d’Or. And not just any: Fjordby Romanian director Cristian Mungiu, who received the supreme award in 2007, for his second feature film, Four months, three weeks, two daysa chilling account of a clandestine abortion in Ceaușescu’s Romania.

This time Mungiu tells the story of a seemingly perfect family, whose beautiful image will little by little crack. In a statement shared by the French distributor of the film, Le Pacte, the American actor of Romanian origin explains what attracted him to this project which allows him to reconnect with his roots and find Renate Reinsve, who already starred in A Different Man :

I’m excited to return to Cannes with this important and timely story about family, and the erosion it can suffer when cultural values clash. Working with a master of cinema like Cristian Mungiu in a Romanian story, and with an adorable international team, was one of the greatest privileges of my career, something I had dreamed of for years. I look forward to sharing this film with audiences at the Cannes Film Festival and beyond.

The clash of cultures mentioned by Sebastian Stan therefore happens with Renate Reinsve (Julie in 12 chapters, Sentimental value), actress now essential in Cannes. She plays his wife in Fjordand is also delighted to have participated in this adventure:

Fjord is one of the most beautiful filming experiences I have had, I learned so much from Cristian and his way of approaching characters and scenes, while shooting in incredible settings. I am very happy to be back in Cannes and to be part of this film.

Fjord will be released in cinemas on August 19. Synopsis:

“The Gheorghiu, a very pious Romanian-Norwegian couple, settle in a village at the end of a fjord where they quickly become friends with their neighbors, the Halbergs. The children of the two families become very close, despite different upbringings.
