James Gunn puts a stop to a film planned in his DC Universe
The Authority, with its “morally very questionable” heroes, does not currently work in the DC Universe.
Slowdown in the new DCU.
While he is in the middle of filming Superman: Man of Tomorrowthe new boss of the saga James Gunn has confirmed that one of the projects announced with great fanfare in 2023 will not see the light of day… at least not right away: The Authority is paused for an indefinite period.
On Threads, the co-boss of DC Studios was cash:
“The script was not yet ready. And above all, it did not work in the whole of the DCU, whether in terms of story or practical constraints. Maybe one day. But not now.”
A hard blow for this project which was one of the ten announced by Gunn and Peter Safran during the launch of the new DC Universe in January 2023.
Basically, The Authority is a cult comic series launched in the 90s, centered on a team of superheroes with much less clean methods than usual. Figures like Midnighter, The Engineer or Jack Hawksmoor, ready to do anything to “repair” the world… even if it means crossing a few red lines.
At the time, Safran compared their mentality to that of Jack Nicholson in Men of honor: guys you want to have on your side… even if they’re scary. Gunn insisted on a murkier approach: “Not just good guys versus bad guys, but very morally questionable characters.”
But here it is: at DC today, no filming without a concrete script. Gunn has said it several times and he sticks to it. He also specifies that he had never planned to write or direct himself The Authority.
Everything is not at a standstill, however. Other projects in the line-up are still moving forward: Booster Gold East “in development“, while Paradise Lost is even in “extreme development”.
Next step for the DCU: the movie Supergirlexpected in cinemas on June 24 in France.
