What does Viggo Mortensen think of the new Aragorn from Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum?

Jamie Dornan will reprise the role in the next film by Andy Serkis. And the mythical interpreter of the King of Gondor is valid.

The passing of the torch will be closely scrutinized.

But Jamie Dornan can already count on strong support: Viggo Mortensen. The actor has no problem with his successor in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.

According to director Andy Serkis, who also takes on the role of Gollum, the historic Aragorn actor fully supports the choice of Jamie Dornan.

Podcast guest Happy, Sad, ConfusedSerkis remains discreet about the casting, but lets go of the essentials: “I don’t want to go into too much detail right now, I’d rather save that for later.” Before adding:

We are absolutely delighted that Jamie is reprising the role… and, by the way, so is Viggo.”

The podcast host reacts: “Oh, great, a token of approval, which means a lot...”

And Serkis confirms: “Yes, it validates 100%!

So no tension on the Middle Earth side.

This new film, set before The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ringwill tell the story of Gollum’s hunt in the years preceding the original trilogy. A terrain already known, but which Serkis wants to explore differently.

There is still a lot to dig into this extremely complex character, probably the most complex that JRR Tolkien wrote” he explains. “It’s a character that Tolkien never stopped revisiting.” The project is part of a broader desire to return to Middle-earth, but with a different approach: “We wanted to come back with several films, and this one was an ideal gateway. It is a more intimate story, almost a psychological investigation into a character who has deeply marked the collective imagination.. There is real relevance in returning to him today.”

On the casting side, several emblematic faces will be back: Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Elijah Wood (Frodo) and Lee Pace (Thranduil). New names are also joining the adventure, including Kate Winslet and Leo Woodall.

On the screenplay, we find the historical writers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, supported by Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou.

For Serkis, the potential is still far from exhausted: “There remains incredible wealth to exploit around this character, and the story fits perfectly between the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings trilogies. It’s a very good way to bring the audience back into this universe.”

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is expected in cinemas on December 15, 2027 in France.
