US box office: Meryl Streep achieves a “fatality” in front of Mortal Kombat II

The Devil Wears Prada 2 stood up to the fighting film from video games. Michael drops to third place but continues to impress.

The announced duel between Meryl Streep and Johnny Cage turned out in favor of the three-time Oscar-winning actress.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 resisted the power of Mortal Kombat II in US theaters this weekend.

The sequel produced by 20th Century Studios retains first place at the US box office for the second consecutive week with approximately $43 million (in 4,200 theaters over the weekend), a contained drop of 47%. The new adventures of Miranda Priestly have already totaled 145 million dollars in cumulative revenue in the United States, thus already exceeding the score of the first opus (125 million in 2006). With already more than 430 million dollars worldwide, The Devil Wears Prada 2 also explodes the world total of the previous part (326 million at the end of its career), after only two weeks of operation. Impressive.

Behind, Mortal Kombat II failed to withstand the shock. After a fierce start, the fighting film still ended its first weekend at 40 million dollars in 3,500 theaters across the Atlantic. This is much better than the score of the first part, which started at $23 million in 2021 (during the Covid period). Mortal Kombat II has so far accumulated 63 million worldwide, for a budget (excluding promotion) of 80 million dollars.

The video game adaptation produced by Warner Bros. thus relegates Michael on the third step of the podium.

The biopic still posted a solid third weekend, at 36.5 million dollars (-33% only), bringing its American cumulative total to 240.4 million as of Sunday. In the United States, Michael has already exceeded the final score of Bohemian Rhapsody (216.6 million). On a global scale, he is still far away: Michael Jackson clocked in at $577 million in worldwide revenue when Queen finished at $910 million.

Another nice surprise of the weekend: Bêêêêtective Private (Sheep Detectives), British police comedy produced by Amazon MGM Studios and Working Title Films is enjoying a good launch at 16 million (in 3,500 theaters). A score higher than that of Paddington in Peru in 2024 (12.7 million) for comparison. A new solid performance for Amazon with an original non-franchise film, led by Hugh Jackman. No date in France yet.
