Minecraft: the sequel to a square title
Jack Black, Jason Momoa and Kirsten Dunst are currently filming in New Zealand and are providing lots of new information in a video posted on the networks.
Everything is now in place for the highly anticipated sequel to the global hit Minecraft.
Minecraft 2 now has an official title. Warner Bros. announces this weekend that it will be called Minecraft: Squared. In other words Minecraft squared in French (the VF title has yet to be determined).
Released in spring 2025, Minecraftproduced by Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment, had largely dominated the box office. Carried by Jack Black and Jason Momoa, the feature film started with an impressive first weekend at $163 million in North America before ending its run with nearly $960 million in revenue worldwide.
Adapted from the famous video game Minecraftthe film followed a ragtag group propelled through a portal into a cubic universe where they were guided by Steve, an expert craftsman played by Jack Black.
Production on this sequel is currently underway. Director Jared Hess is back behind the camera and also co-wrote the screenplay with Chris Galletta.
The main news in the casting is the arrival of Kirsten Dunst. The Oscar-nominated actress will play Alex, Steve’s female counterpart in the universe of Minecraft. This information was revealed in a behind-the-scenes video shown Saturday during TwitchCon.
In addition, Matt Berry will also be back in a role that has not yet been revealed.
Minecraft 2 Or Minecraft squared is expected in theaters on July 21, 2027 in France.
To accompany the announcement, Warner Bros. and Legendary launched a competition allowing players to build, directly in Minecrafta creation likely to appear in the film or in its end credits. The winner will also win an invitation to a private screening of the feature film with their friends.
