Ultimately, there will be no new Stargate series on Prime Video
Bad news for science fiction fans: the big return of Stargate to television will ultimately not take place Amazon has decided not to continue development of the series entrusted to Martin Gero.
The Stargate will remain closed, for the moment.
However, the project seemed to be well underway. In November 2025, Amazon officially ordered a new Stargate series developed by Martin Gero, screenwriter and producer who cut his teeth on Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis at the start of his career.
But according to information from Variety, the streaming giant ultimately ended the project before it even entered production.
According to a source close to the matter, Amazon executives feared that the vision proposed by Gero would essentially only appeal to historical fans of the franchise, without succeeding in attracting a wider audience. A major problem at a time when platforms are looking for series capable of reaching millions of viewers beyond their loyal base.
However, all hope is not lost for stargate enthusiasts. Amazon, which recovered the rights to the franchise during the acquisition of MGM in 2022, continues to explore other avenues to relaunch the universe.
No details on the plot of the abandoned series had been revealed. However, the project brought together several emblematic figures of the saga, including Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, screenwriters of the original 1994 film, as well as Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi, two of the main architects of the television series.
The cancellation is all the more frustrating since Stargate remains one of the most popular science fiction franchises of the last thirty years. Launched in cinemas in 1994 with James Spader and Kurt Russell, it then gave birth to Stargate SG-1, a huge success for ten seasons, then to Stargate Atlantis and several other spin-off series.
If this version will never see the light of day, Amazon has not closed the door. The Stargate remains visibly open… but towards another destination.
