Against the grain 2: the confidences of Matthew Broome

Prime Video’s seducer is back today with the continuation of the successful saga. The 25-year-old Briton, on the rise, confides in Première. Encounter.

He wears a small bracelet of colorful beads on which is written “Team Guy”, a gift given by a fan of The Buccaneersthe romantic series from Apple TV that revealed it. Awarded the Nymphe for Best International Newcomer at the 2026 Monte-Carlo Television Festival, the 25-year-old British actor is back this Wednesday on Prime Video with Against the grain 2: Londonadapted from the successful literary saga of Mercedes Ron.

Matthew Broome picks up Nick’s feverish love story with Noah (Asha Banks), one year after the events of the first British film. Encounter.

PREMIERE: You are surprised by the success of the saga Against the grain ?
MATTHEW BROOME: A little bit, because you never really know with this kind of film, especially in streaming. There are so many things coming out that you can sometimes get a little lost in the shuffle. But it is true that there are the books which serve as a basis and which already have a large number of fans on which we can rely. And also Spanish films… So there was enormous potential. But at the same time, it was also very oppressive because a lot of people weren’t happy that we were making a British version of this story.

Were you able to chat with Gabriel Guevara, who played the role of Nick in the Spanish adaptation?
No, we’ve never even met. He just sent me a private message on social media one day, to congratulate me. But we never really talked. And at the same time, it’s complicated because I didn’t want to reproduce or imitate what he had done on his side. But now that we’ve finished our version, I watched the Spanish films and I have to say it was quite funny to see what they did with it. It’s an interesting experience.

Where are Nick and Noah when it begins? Against the grain 2 ?
Things have changed a little. They have been a couple for a year. Obviously, that changes a lot of things. They are no longer at the beginning of their relationship. One year of love necessarily changes. It’s funny because it mirrors my relationship with Asha on set. We didn’t know each other at all at the start of the first film and, by the time of the second, we had become very close. We were able to draw on our natural complicity to create new things around Noah and Nick.

Do you stay close to books?
Yes, we are still rather faithful to the original novel. But it’s true that the London setting still changes a few things. It gives a little something different, but you will recognize the main scenes of the book.

What do you think makes Nick and Noah so attracted to each other?
For Nick, it’s quite simple: he’s never been with anyone like her. He was never the type to let someone into his heart like that. He is more the type to multiply conquests without ever really looking for a deep connection. This is obviously due to his history with his mother, who abandoned him very young. And when he meets Noah, he discovers someone who doesn’t hesitate to respond to him, who has as much character as him.

After the success of Against the grain and of The Buccaneerswhat do you want to do? Get away from this dramatic lover image a little?
It’s true that I went straight from drama school to Apple series and then to Prime Video films. So I have to ask myself the question of what I want to do next. Right now, I don’t know what I’m going to do next. It’s quite exciting, I must say. It’s also a little scary, but there’s no shortage of options at the moment. I just want to wait until I make the right choice. I would like to play a very chaotic character, someone completely out of character… And why not also do musical comedy? I went through this in my training, so do something on screen way La La Landthat would be great.

And why not the new James Bond? You are young, British, you perfectly tick all the boxes of what the next 007 could be. Didn’t you audition for the role?
No, not at all (laughs). It must be a great job, but I admit that I didn’t even send a tape…

Is there an actor that you particularly like and whose career makes you dream? Someone you would like to draw inspiration from for the rest of yours?
Denzel Washington! I’ve been a huge fan since I was very young. He is someone who impresses me a lot, by his choice of roles but also by his qualities as a speaker. He’s a motivational speaker and I even got into the habit of listening to him speak while I was jogging… He’s totally badass! I would love to have a career like his. I particularly love Flight (2012). I saw it when I was around fifteen and it had a big impact on me. It made me want to become an actor, quite simply…
