Steven Spielberg takes control of the French box office
With more than 400,000 entries for its first week of operation, Disclosure Day takes the lead in the national rankings. De Gaulle resists as best he can.
No surprise at the top of the rankings. Steven Spielberg’s new science fiction film largely dominates the week with more than 420,000 spectators in 600 French theaters.
A result which places Disclosure Day far above the filmmaker’s recent films: The Fabelmans And West Side Story had made significantly more modest starts. On the other hand, the film remains a notch below Ready Player Onewhich attracted nearly 900,000 spectators during its first week in 2018 before ending its career at 2.3 million admissions.
Behind him, The Battle of De Gaulle: the Iron Age displays solid resistance. Antonin Baudry’s film still attracts 230,000 new spectators across 613 theaters, for a contained drop of 39%. In the second week, the feature film has now crossed the milestone of 600,000 tickets sold and still has a real chance of ending its career beyond one million admissions.
On the third step of the podium, Scary Movie 6 still brings together 170,000 spectators in 491 cinemas in France. Attendance fell by 56% in the second week, but the film also exceeded the 500,000 admissions mark. The return of the parody saga, however, remains slightly behind compared to Scary Movie 4 which, at the same stage of its operation twenty years ago, already had more than 620,000 spectators. Remember that the fifth opus was released directly on video.
In fourth place, Obsession continues its impressive journey. Waiting for the phenomenon Backroomswhich arrives this week in French cinemas, Curry Barker’s independent horror film continues to benefit from excellent word of mouth. In the fifth week, it still recorded 160,000 new admissions in 376 theaters, a drop limited to only 23%. Its total is now close to a million spectators, confirming its status as one of the surprises of the year.
Fifth in the ranking, Michael he also continues to impress. Eight weeks after its release, the musical biopic dedicated to Michael Jackson, which has become the biggest success in the history of the genre worldwide, now has 5.34 million admissions in France.
This is more than five times better than The Mandalorian and Groguwhich still fails to reach the milestone of one million spectators here. Attendance at the new film Star Wars has already fallen to 100,000 weekly admissions in its fourth week. For comparison, Solo: A Star Wars Story already had 1.2 million spectators over the same viewing times in 2018.
Finally, the disappointment of the week can be attributed to Vertigo. Despite the presence of Alain Chabat and Jonathan Cohen in the casting, Quentin Dupieux’s new film got off to a very slow start with only 60,000 admissions. Certainly, the film only benefits from a limited number of 270 theaters, but the result remains far from the director’s recent standards. The Second Act had attracted nearly 250,000 spectators in its first week in 2024 after opening the Cannes Film Festival. As for The Piano Accidentit had already attracted 150,000 spectators after one week of operation in 2025.
