The first opinions on Supergirl are surprising
If Milly Alcock caused a sensation in the role of Superman’s cousin, it was the funny Mad Max-like atmosphere that caught the attention during the screenings intended for the American press.
The first reactions to the press screening of Supergirl have just fallen, and they seem to confirm that James Gunn is continuing the construction of his new DC Universe with a tone very different from Superman. Several journalists and critics evoke a “dirtier” film, more emotional, and clearly influenced by Mad Max. Overview of the first opinions posted on social networks, before the film’s release in France on July 1st.
“It’s not a classic, but it’s fun and achieves most of its goals“, writes Simon Thompson (LA Times). Milly Alcock is excellent in the lead role and Lobo is a delight. The other strong points are the action, the humor and the physical production side.”
#Supergirl isn’t a classic but it’s pacey fun and hits most of the targets it aims for. Milly Alcock is great as the titular heroine and Momoa’s Lobo is a blast. Other big wins are the action, humor and when it leans into physical production. Production and costuming design are👍 pic.twitter.com/ogelX1QSCE

For Germain Lussier (Gizmodo / io9), the film is “very pleasant. It doesn’t quite have the resonance of Superman, but it works as an ideal companion, with better characters and more complex relationships. It’s also very moving, which makes the action even stronger.”
#Supergirl is highly enjoyable.
It doesn’t quite have the resonance of Superman, but it acts as both a perfect companion and follow-up to that movie with better characters and more complex relationships.
It’s also incredibly emotional, which makes the action hit even harder. pic.twitter.com/Mic27Q2jKu

Rachel Leishman (Collider) is even more enthusiastic: “Supergirl is everything I hoped it would be. Girls can be messy and that’s great. Kara is not her cousin, and I loved the way the movie shows that. She’s a different and perfect heroine.”
Also, almost more importantly, Supergirl/Kara represents the kind of girl who would do anything for those she loves, including her pet. I related to her in the sense that Krypto is her family and she’ll stop at nothing for him. Girls who love their pets are strong as hell! pic.twitter.com/cbJBkJZt4U

On the side of Chris Killian (Comic Book), the tone is more colorful: “If you mix Guardians of the Galaxy, True Grit and Mad Max, you get Supergirl: a dirty, funny and surprisingly melancholy space adventure. Milly Alcock shines, especially in Kara’s tragedy, and Jason Momoa has a blast as Lobo.”
If you threw GOTG, True Grit, and Mad Max into a DC blender, you’d get #Supergirl – a grimy, funny, yet surprisingly dark space adventure. Milly shines, especially when we get into Kara’s tragic backstory, but Jason Momoa is having the fraggin’ time of his life as Lobo. (1/2) pic.twitter.com/k2wmb7VMdy

Finally, Fico Cangiano (Cine Express) summarizes: “A solid sequel after Superman. More serious and emotionally heavy, with an intergalactic road trip reminiscent of Guardians of the Galaxy and Fury Road. Milly Alcock is a real badass, both strong and vulnerable.“
Milly Alcock is a total badass, delivering a performance that’s both fierce and vulnerable as Kara Zor-El. Can’t wait to see her in future interactions with her cousin and other heroes in the DCU. Keep them coming! 2/2 #supergirl @supergirl pic.twitter.com/kyCLvOsGOy
