Ryan Murphy finally adapts one of Bret Easton Ellis’ most fascinating novels.

It’s a scathing new teen series that should delight fans missing Pretty Little Liars.

Ryan Murphy tackles the cult novel by Bret Easton Ellis, the author of American Psycho with The Shards, as revealed in the sultry trailer which has just been released. A dive into the flamboyant Los Angeles of the 1980s, following a group of privileged high school students from a prestigious private establishment, confronted with questions of identity, sexuality, jealousy and obsession, while a growing danger lurks behind the appearances of ordinary American adolescence.

“At the center of the story is Bret (Igby Rigney), an observant teenager and aspiring writer, whose reality begins to waver with the arrival of a new student as mysterious as he is magnetic, Robert Mallory (Homer Gere). Arriving at the beginning of their final year of high school, Robert appears as a wave of terror sweeps the city: a serial killer nicknamed The Trawler targets teenagers across Los Angeles.

Around Bret gravitates a group of privileged high school students composed in particular of Kaia Gerber, Hayes Warner and Graham Campbell, evolving between parties, luxury, desire, jealousy and manipulation. The adults, played by Wes Bentley, Evan Rachel Wood and Jordan Roth, seem no less troubled than their children.

Through this adaptation, Ryan Murphy rediscovers the themes that made him successful: deceptive appearances, obsessions, the violence lurking beneath the veneer of privileged America and the torments of adolescence. The project is co-produced by Bret Easton Ellis himself.

The first two episodes of The Shards will be available from August 6, on Disney+ in France.
