Eddie Murphy to star in new series from Mad Men creator
The actor and comedian will headline The Chairman, a new drama series developed by Matthew Weiner for Universal’s American platform Peacock.
Eddie Murphy is preparing to take his first steps as the lead actor in a live-action television series.
The actor will star in The Chairman, a new drama developed by Matthew Weiner, the creator of Mad Men, for the Peacock platform (not available in France).
For now, the plot of the series remains a secret.
The project will be produced by Universal Television and 101 Studios, the company of David Glasser, executive producer of Yellowstone. Murphy and Weiner will also serve as producers on the series.
The Chairman will also be the first project resulting from the agreement signed by Chris McCarthy, former boss of Paramount, with NBCUniversal. McCarthy serves as an advisor to the studio in its relationship with David Glasser and 101 Studios.
Above all, it’s a new chapter for Eddie Murphy.
After four seasons of Saturday Night Live between 1980 and 1984, the actor devoted himself mainly to cinema and stand-up. His only experience in a scripted series so far was voice, with The PJs, the animated series he created.
His filmography obviously remains punctuated by comedy classics, from An Armchair for Two to Beverly Hills Cop, including A Prince in New York, and even Doctor Dolittle and Dreamgirls. He also recently reunited with Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F on Netflix.
Opposite him, Matthew Weiner knows drama series particularly well. After working as a screenwriter and executive producer on The Sopranos, he created Mad Men, broadcast for seven seasons on AMC between 2007 and 2015. The series notably won several Emmy Awards and remains one of the most notable American productions of the years 2000-2010.
No filming or broadcast date has yet been announced for The Chairman.
