Lanterns on HBO Max: will there be a season 2?
Season 2 has not yet been officially ordered, but James Gunn and the show’s writers are already working on the sequel.
So, will John Stewart and Hal Jordan leave for a new mission?
A few hours before the end of season 1 of Lanterns, scheduled for next Monday in France on HBO Max, the future of the series is beginning to take shape.
On Threads, James Gunn first sowed doubt by discussing the next episode: “I’ve seen the season finale of Lanterns 500 times and even I can’t wait for it to air,” wrote the co-CEO of DC Studios. When a fan asked if this was the “season finale” and not the “series finale,” Gunn responded:
“Yes, it’s the season finale, that’s right.”
A clarification that changes everything because it clearly suggests that the series is not over. Lanterns is well thought of to have a season 2. But for the moment, HBO has not officially renewed the series.
Behind the scenes, however, the work has already begun.
According to Nexus Point News, Christopher Cantwell has joined this potential season 2 as writer and executive producer. Known for co-creating Halt and Catch Fire, he has also written for the Star Wars and Marvel universes, notably around Doctor Doom.
He joins a writers’ room already formed around Chris Mundy, showrunner of Lanterns. Vanessa Baden Kelly is back to writing, alongside Nakkiah Lui, Zack Whedon, Selwyn Seyfu Hinds and therefore Cantwell. Their mission: to begin drawing the outlines of a possible second season.
Chris Mundy also confirmed this summer that things had already started. In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter in August, he explained:
“We’re about six weeks into building a season, and then we’re going to talk to the people involved very soon.”
At the time, no script had yet been written.
Damon Lindelof, co-creator of the series, also confirmed the existence of this reflection.
Interviewed by Screen Rant, he said: “If the show is successful and people like it, there are a lot of possibilities to launch future seasons. But I believe Chris Mundy has already started a new writers’ room to think about new stories that Lanterns could tell…”
It remains to be seen whether Damon Lindelof will still be there. And how will season 1 end….
