Surprise, Apple’s Imperfect Women will have a season 2
The successful limited series will finally have a sequel centered on the character of Kerry Washington.
A bit like Big Little Lies in its time, Imperfect Women will finally move beyond the successful limited series stage.
Apple has just ordered a second season of its thriller, but with a major change: the story will now focus on Eleanor, the character played by Kerry Washington.
Adapted from the novel by Araminta Hall, the first season followed three best friends: Eleanor, with Mary (Elisabeth Moss) and Nancy (Kate Mara). After the latter’s murder, the two survivors tried to understand what had happened to her, while flashbacks allowed them to gradually reconstruct their history and their secrets.
This new season will take an almost derivative form, since it will leave Los Angeles to follow Eleanor to her hometown. “She will return to Martha’s Vineyard, to an affluent black community,” according to Deadline, “and discover that behind this idyllic facade lie secrets and scandals capable of upending everything she thought she knew about her past.”
Above all, there is no second Imperfect Women novel to adapt.
Exactly like the sequel to Big Little Lies, season 2 will therefore be based on an original story imagined by the creator of the series, Annie Weisman, and Justin Hillian, who will both be co-showrunners.
For the moment, Elisabeth Moss and Joel Kinnaman, who played Robert, Nancy’s widower, are not planned for the casting of this second season. The plot will, however, take up an element of the flash-forward seen in the finale: Eleanor, far from her toxic relationships, was enjoying a new life on a yacht with a new lover. Leslie Odom Jr., who plays his brother, and Sheryl Lee Ralph, who plays their mother, are expected to return, although negotiations with the actors are still ongoing. And season 2 could also provide an answer to one of the mysteries left by the finale: the ambiguous look exchanged between Mary and Robert while they celebrated Mary’s daughter’s birthday together.
Kerry Washington, also executive producer of the series with Elisabeth Moss, is already looking forward to reuniting with Eleanor: “We were delighted to see how these women and their stories touched audiences around the world, and I am very happy to be able to slip into Eleanor’s shoes again. She is intelligent and strong, but she also finds herself confronted with complex and sometimes chaotic situations. At Simpson Street, with our incredible partners at Apple and Love & Squalor Pictures, we can’t wait to explore a new chapter in his life and to see where this story will take us.”
For the moment, Apple has not announced a filming or broadcast date for this season 2.
