A sequel to The Mad History of Space is in preparation
“Are we going to see each other again?”, Yop Solo asks Yogurt. “Who knows? Maybe we’ll see each other again in Spaceballs 2: In Search of More Money?”
Like many parodies, Spaceballs – in French, The Mad History of Space – has acquired its status as a cult film over time. After Frankenstein Junior, The crazy story of the world and just before Sacred Robin Hood, Mel Brooks tackled a big piece of cinema: Star Wars. In Spaceballsreleased in 1987, the director and actor goes deep into pastiche: Star Wars, Alien, The Planet of the Apes – all works of science fiction are found in this rock set, ridiculous and funny as can be. “Cross me through this desert!”
Lord Helmet Black (Rick Moranisknown in Ghostbusters) and his Spaceballs, led by President Esbrouffe (Mel Brooks) have a Machiavellian plan: steal the atmosphere of the planet Druida. For this he captures the Princess of this planet, Vespa (Daphne Zuniga), and his droid, Dot. To save her, the Druid King hires a mercenary Yop Solo (Bill Pullman) and his furry companion Berk (John Candy). In this space adventure, they will meet the wise Yogurt and a mysterious force… The future of the galaxy is in their hands.
Almost forty years later, Spaceballs are back! It’s The Force Awakens. Recently, several sources claimed that Amazon MGM Studios would be developing a sequel to this crazy story. Mel Brooks, now 97 years old, is involved in the project and Josh Gad (The beauty and the Beast) is the executive producer. Rumors quickly confirmed by the actor in an Instagram post:
“My phone has never rang more than it has today. We are so happy! We are just getting started, but working with the legend that is the incredible Mel Brooks to make something worthwhile of this franchise and its legacy is a dream come true.”
This sequel will be directed by Josh Greenbaum (Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar) and even if no plot or title has yet been revealed, we still have an idea to submit.
In the original, while Yop Solo discovers the immense powers to which he is sensitive, like Luke Skywalker, he exchanges with his mentor Yogurt – a sort of Yoda. The latter declares that their paths will cross again soon in Spaceballs 2: The Search for more Money. So that’s a catchy title!
At that time, Mel Brooks deliberately made fun of these franchises which follow one opus to collect greenbacks. Greed is always the reason for consequences. Does Mel Brooks have coffers to fill?
