Avatar 4 is becoming clearer, and James Cameron wants to give more space to this character
The director is already thinking about the continuation of the saga, and he is listening to feedback from fans.
The career ofAvatar: Of Fire and Ashes at the box office is coming to an end, and the 3rd film in the saga will therefore end with 1.5 billion dollars in worldwide revenue. A result significantly down compared to the first two Avatar (respectively 2.9 and 2.3 billion), but sufficient to make the studio’s investment profitable, estimated between 350 and 400 million greenbacks. And therefore validate Avatar 4 ?
Questioned during a press conference organized on the sidelines of the Saturn Awards (ceremony dedicated to science fiction works), James Cameron did not officially announce that the 4th part of Avatar would be made, but obviously he is thinking about it. To the point of having already thought about the modifications he would make to the story following the reception ofAvatar 3 (via Screen Rant).
“To be perfectly clear, we haven’t even made a decision yet on whether to do this. But if I were to do that – which I would say is likely, but not 100% certain – we will learn the lessons from the three films. Compared to Of Fire and Ashes, Varang will surely need to be written a little better. It took its place among all the others, because there are a lot of characters and plots that jostle in the story. So, yeah, we’ll probably want to highlight it more.”
James Cameron often gives the image of the all-powerful and confident author, unafraid to send studio executives packing to impose his vision. Or the fans who complain about the length of the Avatar films, or their déjà vu storyline. But he also knows how to listen to the public when necessary, as he had already done after Avatar 2. And this time it is Varang, the new antagonist played by Oona Chaplin, who could benefit from it.
“It’s a good problem to have to deal with people’s reaction to something. In The Way of Water, people really responded strongly to Payakan. He was quite simply the most beloved character in the film. I didn’t tell the actors. But you say to yourself, it’s better that we put Payakan in Of Fire and Ashes. We learn as we move forward. It’s evolving.“
While waiting for the sequel to be validated, James Cameron continues to distill information. In February, the director revealed flashbacks to the arrival of Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver) in Pandora. And in January, he announced the arrival of Michelle Yeoh in the casting ofAvatar 4 And Avatar 5whose releases are planned for 2029 and 2031. If the schedule is maintained, of course…
