Brad Pitt back in World War Z 2: it’s official!

The sequel will be directed by Edward Berger, the filmmaker of Conclave and Nothing New in the West.

Thirteen years later, finally the sequel…

It took a long time for the project to emerge from purgatory. But this time, it’s official: Brad Pitt will be back in World War Z 2.

Paramount has just confirmed the start of work on this long-awaited new opus, with Edward Berger directing and Dennis Kelly writing the screenplay. The details of the plot remain completely secret for the moment.

The choice of director is particularly interesting: the German filmmaker, awarded an Oscar for In the West, nothing newalso signed the papal thriller Conclave. As a bonus, Berger has just directed Brad Pitt on The Ridersan A24-produced film that wrapped filming earlier this year and is currently in post-production.

For the superstar, it’s a return to the shoes of Gerry Lane, the former United Nations agent launched across the world in a race against time to try to stop a pandemic transforming humans into zombies. Released in 2013 under the direction of Marc Forster, the first World War Z had grossed more than $540 million at the worldwide box office.

However, this sequel seemed for a long time doomed to never see the light of day. Several versions have been considered over the years, including a project directed by David Fincher, with Brad Pitt already announced to return. But this version was finally abandoned in 2019. Last April, Paramount announced during CinemaCon that the second film was finally actively developed.

This time it’s OK. Green light. The studio, which is coming out in theaters in a few days Heart of the Beastsurvivalist thriller starring Brad Pitt, is ready to go.

World War Z 2 will be produced by Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner for Plan B, while Edward Berger will also executive produce.

No release date or additional cast members have been announced.
