Black and whites, great classics and restored copies: Cannes Classics 2026 offers a stroll through the history of cinema…

This year it is the American production designer Dean Tavoularis, who passed away on April 22, who is in the spotlight. In 1975 he received the Oscar for best artistic direction for The Godfather 2.

Created in 2004 as digital technology invades our societies, Cannes Classics wants to promote heritage, film libraries and national archives around the world. He intends to continue to keep the memory of cinema alive in a time of technological change. Films from all walks of life will be presented.

On the program, in preview, two recent works: the film by Bérenger Thouin, The Golden Age and the documentary directed by Jean-Gabriel Périot, A Manifesto Life.

Pan’s Labyrinth will be the great restored film of this year, after presenting The Mom and the Whore, Crazy Love, Napoleon by Abel Gance and The Gold Rush. Guillermo del Toro’s film will be presented in a 4K copy in his presence. Among all these restored works, a few films stand out: the feature film directed by the writer André Malraux: Hope, Sierra de Terue ; The Devils by Ken Russell presented by Mark Kermode, Undeclared workin the presence of director Jerzy Skolimowski, and finally Dario Argento will be at the screening Let’s say one evening at dinner a film by Giuseppe Patroni Griffi, for which he wrote the screenplay.

Among the documentary films, several big names stand out: Bruce Dern, David Lean, Vittorio De Sica and Chris Marker…

And finally, a special screening will screen three recent short films in the presence of the film teams: Du Ling Zhi Ying by Jia Zhang-Ke, Goodnight Lamby by Dustin Yellin and Zamine Bazi directed by Amirhossein Shojaei.

Cannes Classics is therefore an inseparable component of the Official Selection.
