Christopher Nolan’s next film could be a horror film
The director admits to being more tempted than ever by this particular genre, which he has never tried before…
After exploring science fiction, war films, thrillers, biopics and now the epic with The OdysseyChristopher Nolan could soon tackle a genre he has never tackled head-on: horror.
Asked by The Hollywood Reporterthe British director explains that certain terrifying sequences of The Odyssey – like that of the Cyclops – only reinforced his desire to make a truly horrific film: “This experience only whetted my desire to do more!“
If this idea has been pursuing him for years, Christopher Nolan assures that he will not launch without having found the ideal concept:
“I always thought that horror was a genre that had to be approached very carefully conceptually. It takes an exceptional idea.”
The filmmaker cites in particular Obsession of Curry Baker as a role model:
“It’s an incredible idea. This film works perfectly. It’s not a question of technique or effects. It’s all about history.”
A conviction that he had already expressed in the podcast Empire. According to him, horror cinema is the most visceral genre there is:
“You’re trying to make people feel something in their bones. Even the films I watch with my kids often take incredible risks in their first few minutes. It’s a genre that requires experimentation…”
All that remains is to find this famous idea that will finally convince him to take the plunge. A particularly exciting prospect when you know Christopher Nolan’s taste for dizzying concepts and high-tension stories. After Memento, Inception Or Oppenheimera b could well become one of the most anticipated projects of his career. But it could take a few years to take shape…
