Claws of the Night: Freddy Krueger will return in a new reboot

Sixteen years after his last appearance in the cinema, he is preparing to haunt a new generation of spectators. Paramount is developing a reboot, in partnership with Wes Craven’s rights holders.

As horror becomes more and more profitable in theaters, the great figures of the genre will all be brought back to the screen in the years to come. Waiting Carrie on Prime Video and the return of Blair Witchit’s Freddy Krueger’s turn to treat himself to yet another reboot.

Paramount has reached an agreement with the heirs of Wes Craven to develop a new film set in the universe of The Claws of the Night (A Nightmare on Elm Street), around the legendary bogeyman.

The project is currently in development under the Paramount Primal banner, the studio’s new label dedicated to genre cinema. If no director or screenwriter has yet been announced, the film will be based on the original screenplay imagined by Wes Craven in 1984. One thing is certain: Freddy Krueger, the killer with the burned face armed with his famous glove with steel blades, will be back.

The American rights were granted by the estate of Wes Craven, represented by his widow Iya Labunka and his son Jonathan Craven, who will produce the feature film alongside Marc Toberoff, the lawyer who allowed the family to recover the rights to the original film.

In a press release, Iya Labunka welcomed this new collaboration : “Jonathan and I are thrilled to partner with the Paramount Primal team. We can’t wait to introduce the world of Claws of the Night from Wes Craven to a new generation of fully invested fans. Wes would have been happy to see horror cinema finally take the place it deserves in popular culture. We can’t wait to gather together in a dark room – today’s campfire – to discover the next chapter of this story.”

Created in 1984 by Wes Craven, Freddy Krueger has appeared in nine feature films, a television series and several video games. His last appearance on the big screen dates back to the 2010 reboot, which grossed more than $117 million worldwide on an estimated budget of $35 million. This new version will now attempt to sustainably relaunch one of the most legendary franchises in horror cinema.
