The Odyssey: the other adaptation… entirely generated by AI!
While Nolan’s epic arrives in theaters, another adaptation of Homer’s poem is about to see the light of day. Its particularity? It was entirely generated by artificial intelligence.
Everyone will be talking about Ulysses and his mythological adventure this summer…
And not just because of Christopher Nolan. A much more unusual version of Homer’s famous story is preparing to arrive. Titled Odysseus: The Fallthis 2h15-minute film is presented as a feature film entirely designed using artificial intelligence.
Behind the project, we find the Fountain 0 studio and director Ash Koosha, already author of the docu-fiction Dreams of Violetsalso generated by AI and presented at the Tribeca Festival. Passionate about the Greek hero since his childhood, the filmmaker explains in the American press that he worked for three months on this very personal rereading of The Odyssey :
“I have been obsessed with this story since I was a child. What has always fascinated me is the character of Ulysses and the way I perceive him after reading different translations and interpretations. I wanted to tell my own version.“
Unlike Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster, this adaptation obviously did not benefit from a Hollywood budget. The film was produced using the Kling AI video generator, using simple notes rather than a traditional script. A method which, according to Ash Koosha, offered him great creative freedom:
“We are still in post-production and yet the script remains open to interpretation. The risks no longer exist.”
The feature film also uses the digitized faces of twelve people, including that of the director himself, who serves as a model for the character of Ulysses. A professional actress, several models and even people close to the project agreed to lend their features in exchange for a share of the film’s revenue.
For Tom Rogers, executive president of Fountain 0, the objective is not to compete with Christopher Nolan, but to demonstrate that artificial intelligence now makes it possible to produce films in just a few months, capable of reacting almost in real time to cultural news: “I don’t think anyone will think this movie is better than Nolan’s.” An assumed frankness, before adding that Odysseus: The Fall must above all serve as a showcase for the possibilities offered by AI-generated cinema, whether they be intimate dramas or large epic frescoes.
The producer believes that this technology could allow young filmmakers to offer their own take on a work or an event much more quickly, with budgets unlike those of the major studios. “With Odysseus: The Fallwe demonstrate that it is now possible to appropriate a monument of literature and offer your own vision of it in record time.”
The result will be available for rental and purchase on the Fountain 0 website by the end of summer. It remains to be seen whether the spectators will respond, just to compare with The Odyssey by Christopher Nolan, which will be released in theaters on July 15.
