Disappearance of Marjane Satrapi: the author of Persepolis was 56 years old
She received the jury prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007 for the adaptation of her successful comic strip.
The Franco-Iranian artist Marjane Satrapi, notably known for Persepolisleft us at the age of 56.
“Marjane Satrapi died of sadness a little over a year after the death of Mattias Ripa, her husband and the love of her life“, indicates this Thursday a press release from his relatives sent to AFP.
Born in Iran and naturalized French in 2005, she recounted her youth and her exile in Europe in the comic strip Persepolisawarded at the Angoulême Festival and sold four million copies. Its film adaptation, co-directed with Vincent Paronnaud, received the jury prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007 as well as two Césars (best first film and best adaptation) and an Oscar nomination for best animated film.
In 2011, she brought to the screen another of her comics, Chicken with plumsbut this time in live action with Mathieu Amalric, Edouard Baer, Maria de Medeiros and Golshifteh Farahani in the cast. She has signed four other feature films including Radioactiveon the life of Marie Curie (played by Rosamund Pike) and Paradise Parishis last film released in 2024, with Monica Bellucci in the lead role.
A committed artist concerned about the situation in her native country, Marjane Satrapi also directed the work in 2023 woman life freedomin tribute to the uprising of Iranian women after the death of Mahsa Amini. In January 2025, she declined the Legion of Honor to protest against France’s hypocrisy towards Iran:
“This gesture is a mark of solidarity with the Iranians, especially with women and with Iranian youth, but also with my French compatriots held hostage in Iran. While young freedom-loving Iranians, dissidents, artists, are refused visas, the children of Iranian oligarchs wander around Paris as in Saint-Tropez without this posing any problem (…) The Iranians do not need communication, we need concrete actions. The refusal of the Legion of Honor is in no way an action or a thought against France. I deeply love this country of mine (…) I will be honored when all the defenders of freedom are at my side.”
