Dr. House celebrates its 20th anniversary: will the series ever return?

The creator, David Shore, remembers and leaves a small door open…

He remains as one of viewers’ favorite doctors. Dr. House at 20 years old. On November 16, 2004, Hugh Laurie landed on American TV in the role of the grumpy diagnostician. A role that he will play for 8 seasons and 177 episodes!

I never tire of talking about houseand I don’t think that will ever happenr” smiles the creator David Shore in an anniversary interview with Entertainment Weekly. “I can’t believe it’s been 20 years…” he continues, before explaining that, if the series were to be made one today, it would not be declined “probably not in a 24 episode season. I don’t regret anything, everything went very well, but doing 24 episodes a year is exponentially more difficult than doing 10, 12 or 8 episodes a year.”

It has now been 12 years since Dr. House hung up his white coat. And when asked to analyze the finale, David Shore is more eloquent. Citing the popular fan theory that Wilson dreamed the end of the series and that house would have died in this fire, he blurted out: “People have the right to please themselves and interpret it however they want. There are certain things I wanted to say with the show, and I would hate for people to interpret it in a way that was completely contrary to what I intended. But now, have fun with the ending. In a way, it’s because people have embraced it that the series continues to live on in them. Now, this is a vision (that of Wilson’s dream) that I did not have in mind… even if it is not incompatible at all with what I did.”

As for knowing what becomes house years later, the creator takes a pinch of salt: “I don’t want to get ahead of myself by saying things. Because, from time to time, it occurs to me that I would like to work on a sequel to this or that. And then I like the idea let other people think about it too, have their vision, and I don’t want to prove them wrong by giving too definitive an answer. Let’s say that he is there, out there, doing his thing. Dr. House.”

So will the series ever return? If only to have a reunion of House and Wilson? David Shore take it slowly, but still open the door to the idea of a comeback:

“I never really considered it… I wouldn’t say no, but these things are very, very difficult to do. And you don’t want to spoil the ending. As Hugh said at the time, Dr. House is the kind of guy who leaves the party early, he’s not the type to linger, you wonder where he is, not why he’s still there… We can’t spoil it. .But at the same time, yes, it would be fun. story, a beautiful story… and being able to align everyone’s agendas and that’s truly the most difficult part.”
