Edge of Tomorrow” – Doug Liman: “Warner Bros. keeps talking to me about making a sequel”
Ten years later, the sequel to the film with Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt seems closer than ever to becoming a reality.
A few weeks ago, Tom Cruise blew out the tenth anniversary candles of Edge of Tomorrowthe film of Doug Liman whose poster he shares with Emily Blunt. Based on the concept of a time loop in the context of an alien invasion, the blockbuster showed Tom Cruise-the hero in another light, and had great critical and public success.
For the tenth anniversary of the film, the interpreter of Commander William Cage ended his message with a sentence that restarted the rumor machine. He wrote thus: “Thank you to Warner Bros. for making this film. I look forward to hearing more about the great films we will be working on in the future.” If these words are a certain reference to deal that Cruise signed earlier this year with the famous studio, many assumed it was also a quiet nod following Edge of Tomorrowawaited for so many years.
Asked about this by Total Film on the occasion of the release of The Instigatorshis latest production with Matt Damon, Doug Liman says he feels honored by the public’s need to rediscover this universe:
“I think there’s probably no better compliment for a film than to have audiences clamor for a sequel.he declares. For Road House, it’s the case. For Edge of Tomorrow, Warner Bros. keeps talking to me about making a sequel.”
He continues, explaining that this sequel would be a real Edge of Tomorrow 2.0. It must be said that since the film’s release ten years ago, Doug Liman has directed no less than seven feature films, including Barry Seal: American Trafficalso with Tom Cruise, and the remake of Road Houseaccompanied by its share of controversies.
“Tom and I recently rewatched Edge Of Tomorrow together…he teaches us. I haven’t watched it since it came out. And I have a very short attention span and memory. I couldn’t watch it entirely as a spectator, but I didn’t watch it as its director either.”
That Tom Cruise is carrying out this project with Doug Liman is not surprising, he who has always worn many hats. But what could be the trajectory of his character? Already, at the time, the question of the cowardice inherent in a role offered to the one who had then shot Top Gun, Minority Report, War of the Worlds, Jack Reacher or the first four parts of the saga of Impossible mission. “I didn’t know if he was going to leave the film when I suggested making his character a coward. It’s completely contrary to the image of Tom Cruise,” says the director.
Will William Cage always need a Rita Vrataski (the character played by Emily Blunt) to show courage? Moreover, the British actress who we recently saw in another action film, The Fall Guywould she agree to restart a shoot that could be just as trying as the first?
It is likely that we will soon know more about the evolution of this project, Warner having decided to bet everything on their franchises.
