Evil: “If another broadcaster wants us, we'll come back to life!”
As season 4 begins today, announced as the last, the star trio of Evil remains hopeful and wants to believe that a sequel is possible after the end. Katja Herbers, Mike Colter and Aasif Mandvi tell us all.
Thunderbolt in the war against the Demon: Evil, the excellent mystical-religious horror series will soon end. The broadcaster Paramount + has decided to put an end to the drama of Robert and Michelle King (The Good Wife) last February, but leaving Evil a chance to end properly. Four bonus episodes were ordered and filmed immediately. Katja Herbers, Mike Colter And Aasif Mandvi therefore said goodbye to Kristen, David and Ben, not without a certain bitterness, as they confided to Première. Encounter.
FIRST: How did you react when you learned that this was going to be the end?
Katja Herbers : Boo, that sucks!
Mike Colter : We were a little in shock. It took me a week to realize personally. It took me a while to be happy that the series had a real ending, that we had this chance to be able to wrap up our stories. And then I realized that I was going to be able to enjoy my friends a little longer. Because generally, series are canceled after filming. There, we had time to enjoy our last moments together.
You didn't expect it at all?
Katja Herbers : No, because the series was so well received. The reviews are great. And we still had plenty of things to talk about. So I didn't understand: why are we canceling something that is so good? If I had the feeling that the series was tired, that we had reached the end, then why not. But there, I had the feeling that we were being canceled at our peak of form… We are in the prime of life and then bam! We get hit by a bus!
Mike Colter : Except that the bus didn't kill us… We're in a sort of coma.
That's to say ? Could the series return?
Katja Herbers : Let's say that if another broadcaster wants to take us over, then we will come back to life. Maybe there's a magic potion waiting for us somewhere…
So, is there a real end to this story, at the end of season 4?
Aasif Mandvi : Yes, Robert King (the co-creator) fought for us to have four additional episodes, in order to offer the series any conclusion. This way, fans won't get too frustrated. But the ending isn't too definitive either. It remains open enough to continue to another chapter, if the series were to be resumed elsewhere. We conclude several intrigues, and we leave some elements unanswered. But at the same time, it's the DNA ofEvil.
Will the ending provide an answer to the theological part? Will we know if the fantastic and demonic events really take place or if it all emanates from their minds?
Aasif Mandvi : Yes. And no. And a bit of both (laughs).
Katja Herbers : Because the series lives from this ambiguity. There is no question of concluding Evil definitively by saying: such an answer is the truth! There are two sides to this coin. People choose to believe or not.
Aasif Mandvi : In summary, the narrative part of Evil will have a conclusion, but the religious theme will remain vague, because it is one of the great questions of human existence.
Which of you three is the most religious and which is the most skeptical in real life?
Katja Herbers : I am quite close to my character. I don't really believe it, but I do believe that certain rituals can help people.
Aasif Mandvi : Personally, I believe more than Ben. I believe there are things beyond our understanding. Now, I also think that religious organizations have done as much good as bad in the world.
Mike Colter : I'm a little in between. I am a fairly pragmatic person. I like logic. I have certainties, but I am also open when it comes to listening to the opinions of others. I'm not one to denigrate beliefs. I believe that the Universe has the art of making you doubt and I do not want to discredit the Universe, no matter who is behind it (laughs).
How would you describe season 4 as it begins? Is this the final battle taking place?
Katja Herbers : In fact, I have the impression that we have never been so funny! The first few episodes are really fun. We almost slip into pure comedy.
Aasif Mandvi : It’s true that we usually say that Evil is a horror series. But the more it goes, the more the series explores different genres. The more it goes, the more the tone becomes comedy. Robert and Michelle (King) really want to do something fun at the end of the day. There has always been this aspect in Evil. But, the writing is moving more and more in this direction over the last few seasons. I believe people who stopped watching Evil after the first episodes should re-consider the series from another angle.
Katja Herbers : It's true that the first episode of the series begins with very dark murders. But five years later, we're not there anymore!
How do you feel today, after finishing filming the series?
Mike Colter : Nostalgia and hope. If it's really over, then Evil will have been a wonderful adventure. The series will continue to live on one platform or another for a long time. But if the series is not finished, if we are picked up elsewhere (by a platform other than Paramount +) then we know exactly what we want to do! All ideas are already on the table. We know what to shoot and Robert (King) is already ready to write it!
Evil, season 4, to watch on Paramount + from May 23, 2024.
