F1, the film: Lewis Hamilton announces that the sequel is in preparation
On the sidelines of the season opener in Melbourne, the Ferrari driver confirms that he is working on F1 2, the film.
Formula 1 resumes its rights this weekend. The Australian Grand Prix opens the 2026 season, in which Lewis Hamilton, driver for Ferrari and now also a Hollywood film producer, will obviously participate.
The seven-time world champion in the discipline took advantage of his visit to a press conference in Melbourne to discuss F1, the movie 2. The sequel, mentioned last year by director Joseph Kosinski, and which seems to be on track:
“We’re already working on a first script. Our first meeting was towards the end of last year – with Jerry Bruckheimer, Joseph Kosinski and me – to discuss different ideas and directions for the story. Then we had several meetings with Ehren Kruger (the screenwriter of the first part). It’s really exciting. I can’t wait.”F
There should therefore be a sequel to the blockbuster which totaled $630 million at the box office last summer.
Lewis Hamilton would return as producer and expert, after this first experience which allowed him to discover the mechanics of Hollywood from the inside. The pilot acknowledges that this first project was “intense”but also extremely educational. He says this immersion gave him a better understanding of what works on screen – and what could be improved moving forward. He also highlights the film’s impact on the popularity of the sport: “I get messages from people who have just seen the film and who have fallen in love with Formula 1.”
Despite the enthusiasm around the project, Hamilton assures that there is no question of rushing. The pilot serves as a reminder that sequels often struggle to match the magic of the first film.
“Sequels aren’t always successful. But we have a great team, a fantastic cast and a very talented writer. I’m not worried, but we’ll take our time to make it perfect.”
