Firefly is back! Nathan Fillion announces new series
The entire cast will be back. But there is a twist: it will be an animated series!
Browncoats can bring out their weapons.
Firefly is back, but this time in an animated version.
The news was made official by Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk, respectively Mal Reynolds and Hoban “Wash” Washburne, during a panel meeting at Awesome Con in Washington this Sunday. The rest of the original cast is also there, promising continuity faithful to the cult universe imagined by Joss Whedon.
In this video published immediately on Instagram, Fillion confirmed that the animated series not only has the green light from its creator, but also the support of 20th Century Fox/Disney. “They said yes,” he assures. On the production side, the showrunners will be the couple Tara Butters (Agent Carter, Dollhouse) and Marc Guggenheim (Arrow, The Flash), already familiar with the world of thriller series. The script is already written, and Oscar- and Emmy-winning animation company ShadowMachine is ready to bring Serenity and her crew to life. All that remains is to find a platform to broadcast the series.
For several weeks, Fillion and Tudyk had been leaking clues on Instagram, knocking on the doors of actors Gina Torres (Zoe), Morena Baccarin (Inara), Sean Maher (Simon), Summer Glau (River) and Jewel Staite (Kaylee). The fans quickly understood: something big was brewing.
Cult series created by Joss Whedon, released in 2002 and canceled after only 11 episodes, Firefly was a television comet which left a lasting imprint on sci-fi fans who, for two decades, have dreamed of seeing it return to the air. Maybe animation will be the solution.
