Marvel will launch a new saga, separate from the MCU, with Echo
The studio unveiled “Marvel Spotlight”, which aims to create stories independent of the Marvel Universe, on a smaller scale.
Echo will be an opportunity for Marvel to test new things: its first series for adults (classified TV-MA by the American censors), its first series for binge-watchers, and also its first series to be released under the banner Marvel Spotlight.
Indeed, at the beginning of the episode, instead of the usual Marvel logo, it is the logo Marvel Spotlight in retro style and accompanied by a musical soundtrack composed by Michael Giacchino who guest-stars. You can see this below:
This new categorization takes its name from a comic book series first introduced by Marvel in 1971, to launch new characters. As Brad Winderbaum, head of streaming at Marvel Studios, explained during a recent screening (via Marvel.com) this “Marvel Spotlight offers a platform to bring more grounded and character-driven stories to the screen, and in the case ofEcho, by focusing on street issues, more than on the great continuity of the MCU.“
In other words, stories on a smaller scale, completely independent, which are not intended to shake up the Marvel Cinematic Universe even if they take place within it.
“Just like comic book fans don’t need to read Avengers or Fantastic Four to enjoy a Ghost Rider Spotlight comic, our audience doesn’t need to have seen other Marvel series to understand this that happens in Maya’s story and in Echo“.
So, as Kingpin is the big villain and Daredevil also makes an appearance, are they now considered Marvel Spotlight characters, on the fringes of the MCU?
The five episodes of Echo will be seen on Wednesday January 10, 2024 on Disney+ in France.
