Moana 3 is coming: Dwayne Johnson is already announcing the sequel
After the worldwide success of Moana 2 and while waiting for the live version this summer, Disney is officially heading towards a third animated film.
The adventure is far from over for Vaiana.
While he is currently promoting the live action version of Moanaexpected in cinemas on July 8 in France at the cinema, Dwayne Johnson confirmed that Disney was already working on Moana 3.
The actor, who lends his voice to the demigod Maui in animated films, spilled the beans during a press conference in Rio de Janeiro:
“Yes, we talked about Moana 3. But first, we’re going to let this movie out in live-action. And then, we will find our wonderful screenwriters, Jared Bush And Dana Ledoux Millerwho will also write this third film….“
The success of the franchise obviously explains this decision. Released in 2016, the first Moana had grossed $680 million at the worldwide box office before becoming one of the most watched films in Disney+ history. As for Moana 2initially conceived as a series for the streaming platform, it was eventually transformed into a feature film… with immense success. After a record start during Thanksgiving weekend 2024, the film ended its career with more than $1.05 billion in worldwide receipts.
Unsurprisingly, Dwayne Johnson and Auliʻi Cravalho are expected to reprise their respective voice roles as Maui and Moana in this third episode, even if no release date has yet been announced by Disney.
