Silo, season 3: the trailer that lost its memory

Silo, is it complicated? Even the actors got lost in season 3

Back on Apple TV, the SF series launches its third season today. An exciting burst of episodes but which also gave its own casting a hard time, as the plot becomes more complex and gains in density.

The Silo “mystery box” reopens today.

Available from July 3 on Apple TV (also accessible in France for myCANAL subscribers), season 3 is off to a strong start. More ambitious and more controlled than the previous one, it finally accelerates the revelations and transforms the science fiction series into an immense puzzle where each piece gradually finds its place. Simply exciting. Even intoxicating!

But we have to admit: following Silo is not always easy. Between the piling up mysteries, the loss of memory, the back and forth in time and a deliberately labyrinthine narration, which multiplies the blanks to be filled in like a treasure hunt, the series requires constant attention. A challenge for the spectators, but also for the cast, who also admits to having sometimes lost themselves in this sprawling plot.

In an interview given to The Verge, showrunner Graham Yost recounts that an actor one day pointed out to him that a scene could not take place at that moment in the story since a conversation supposed to precede it had already taken place. Another error was even spotted by the Japanese subtitle team, who pointed out that some dialogue contradicted what was happening on screen. “Oh shit…you’re right!” the producer replied.

To avoid this type of false connection, the whole team began to monitor the coherence of the story. A necessity, especially since this third season now alternates between silos and eras, since another prequel timeline brings us back to the moment when humanity is preparing to bury itself underground. Especially since Juliette Nichols, played by Rebecca Ferguson, suffers from amnesia at the start of the season! And because the episodes are shot in a completely different order than when they aired, the actors had to constantly remind themselves of exactly where their character was.

Rebecca Ferguson explains that she relied heavily on the hair and makeup teams, responsible for monitoring the evolution of each scar, burn or injury over different time periods. “These small changes have huge repercussions on everything that follows,” emphasizes the actress.

Her partner Alexandria Riley, who plays Camille Sims, reveals that filming days often began with a real catch-up session:

“The director reminded us where we were, what had just happened and what was going to happen next. The story is already complicated in itself, but when you shoot everything out of order, you end up getting confused…”

Even Common, who played Robert Sims, regularly took the time to go over the situation with his partner before certain scenes, “just to get the story back in his head.”

If the actors themselves sometimes needed instructions, spectators can be reassured: behind its seemingly impenetrable story, Silo never cheats. The pieces of the puzzle fit together gradually but perfectly. And this season 3 ends up revealing a large part of its secrets. There still remain the final answers, which season 4 – already announced as the conclusion of the series – will have to provide.
