Kurt Russell’s letter to Tom Cruise to say “thank you”

“Many people in our community have switched to the platform model…”

Although he is currently starring in the series Monarch on the Apple streaming platform, actor Kurt Russell remains a cinema icon.

And he also knows that theatrical films have been in danger for several years. So when Top Gun 2 revived the public’s interest, after Covid, in the collective experience, the former hero of Stargate took up his finest pen to say thank you to Tom Cruise. He tells Entertainment Weekly today that he personally wrote to Tom Cruise about the aerial blockbuster that grossed $1.48 billion worldwide:

“I actually sent Tom a note because I thought it was exactly the type of movie we needed to try to get the movie industry back on track, an industry that’s been struggling since COVID. People have gotten out of the habit of going to see movies together and gotten used to watching things at home.”

Direct consequence, according to the now 74-year-old actor: the massive growth of streaming. The platforms have become “extremely popular”, with “many people in our community who have switched to this model”, to the detriment of the collective experience in the room.

Kurt Russell has also now taken the path of platforms. It will return in a few days on Apple TV for season 2 of Monarch.
