Stranger Things: Vecna’s last words were cut during editing!
Actor Jamie Campbell Bower shares what he wanted to say. But…
While Stranger Things has just bowed out after five seasons, Jamie Campbell Bower makes a surprising revelation: Vecna has not said her last word!
In the literal sense, since the British actor confides that Vecna’s last words, in the final scene, were simply cut.
Spoiler alert!
The series created by the Duffer Brothers ends in blood and dust, with a final confrontation pitting Hawkins’ heroes against the great architect of chaos. It is Joyce who puts a definitive end to Vecna’s reign by cutting off her head. A radical gesture. Final. But originally, Bower imagined that his character might have said one last word with his last breath. Guest on Jimmy Fallon’s The Tonight Show, the actor explained that he wanted Vecna to whisper “please don’t” — “please don’t do that” — just before being decapitated:
“I wanted to try to convey the words ‘please don’t’. I don’t know if anyone has seen The First Shadow, the Stranger Things play about Henry Creel’s past. In that story, Henry and Joyce meet. So when she approaches him at that moment, I felt like his humanity could resurface. That we could reintroduce the idea that there was still a possibility…that he could be saved.”

A strong, almost redemptive intention.
Jamie Campbell Bower also says that he had already succeeded in imposing his vision in the past: “During the filming of season 4, there is a scene where Eleven returns Vecna telekinetically – during the winter ball – and she says “Hi”. Just before, I groaned a little. We were in post-sync, and I said: “It looks like I’m saying “you”. Can I add it in post-sync?” They responded : “Yes, yes, of course.” I didn’t want to overstep his line and make it less impactful, but let’s try, and it worked.
Building on this experience, the actor tried the same thing for the season 5 finale:
“In post-sync, I was literally moaning. All I wanted to say was ‘Please don’t’. We tried… But it didn’t work. It didn’t come right. But it’s this emotion that we want to convey in that moment…”
Result: no words. Just one look, one stifled breath, and the end.
All episodes of Stranger Things are now available on Netflix.
