Monsters Inc. 3: Pixar will make a new sequel

Pixar is diving back into Monstropolis. The studio has launched development of a third film around Sully and Bob. But it’s not for now.

Pixar continues to alternate between original projects and sequels. And this time, it’s an old acquaintance who is about to come out of the closet.

While Jumpers has just got off to a good start at the box office, the animation studio is preparing the return of its mythical monsters: Monsters and Co. 3 is officially in development.

The information comes from a long article in Wall Street Journal devoted to the behind the scenes of Pixar, published on the occasion of the release of Jumpers. The newspaper reveals that the studio is currently working on a third film based on the famous franchise.

Released in 2001, Monsters and Co. was based on a brilliant idea: in the city of monsters, energy is produced thanks to the cries of fear of children. To power the city, the monsters must cross the doors and scare the little humans while they sleep. Directed by Pete Docter and voiced by John Goodman and Billy Crystal (in original version), the film was a huge worldwide success with $528.7 million in revenue.

The saga was then enriched with a sequel in the form of a prequel in 2013, Monsters Academydirected by Dan Scanlon, which did even better at the box office with $743.5 million collected worldwide.

Recently, the universe extended onto the small screen with the series Monsters at Workwhich aired for two seasons on Disney Plus.

For the moment, we do not know who will direct this third part intended for the cinema. Plot details also remain secret, as does the period of history in which the action will take place.

Before seeing Monsters and Co. 3Pixar will release Toy Story 5next June at the cinema.. Are also under construction The Incredibles 3scheduled for 2028 and directed by Peter Sohn, as well as a Coco 2announced for 2029. By following this calendar, Monsters and Co. 3 should not see the light of day on our screens before 2030 at the earliest.

But Pixar is not only banking on nostalgia: the studio also continues to try more original bets, like Jumpers at the moment and like Gattoa completely new film expected next year.
