Netflix prepares spin-offs of Wednesday and Peaky Blinders
Ready for new series about Uncle Foul and Aunt Polly?
At the time of the end of year reviews, Bloomberg is already looking to the future: the site specializing in the economy looks at the 2024 and 2025 projects of streaming platforms, and reveals that Netflix would like to expand several of their successful universes. They cite two specific examples: a new series derived from Wednesdayand two from Peaky Blinders.
At the end of last year, following the phenomenal success of Wednesdaydedicated to the eldest of The Addams Familythe firm quickly announced the launch ofa season 2. Which was delayed due to strikes, and which should be quite different from the first side at the requests of its main actress, Jenna Ortega. “Before season 2 even began filming, the company began talking about a new show tied to The Addams Family, we read about this. It would be dedicated to Uncle Fetide, played in the series by Fred Armisen.”
A character barely glimpsed during the first season, that we could follow as an adult or teenager? Bloomberg immediately adds that nothing is signed: “As with any show in development, there is no guarantee that Uncle Fester will see the light of day. The writers must find a good story, the studio must renegotiate the actors’ contracts, everyone’s schedules must align …But Netflix is looking to launch programs related to The Addams Family to build on the success of Wednesday.”
Note that Netflix is not the sole decision maker regarding this program, since it is initially a series developed by MGM Televisions. In partnership with the brand with the red N, but not 100% created by Netflix. Same observation for Peaky Blindersthe other show cited by Bloomberg, which was initially a BBC concept.
We know that after six successful seasons, the story of Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) and his family should conclude in a film, but there would also be talk of spin-ofs.
Explaining that Netflix’s strategy increasingly resembles those of the big Hollywood studios, since it is now a question of “make numerous sequels, prequels and reboots based on existing intellectual properties”, Bloomberg writing : “This includes a potential TV show in the world of the action franchise Extractionas well as spin-offs of the popular series Peaky Blinders. One of them could take place in Boston in the middle of the 20th century, about twenty years after the end of the original story of Peaky Blindersand another would focus on the character of Polly, the matriarch of the Shelby crime clan.” A character that we would undoubtedly find younger, following the disappearance of his interpreter, Helen McCrory.
All this obviously remains to be confirmed by Netflix or their partners. In the rest of the article, we discuss competing but similar strategies, Prime Video having offered itself the most expensive series in history in the universe of Lord of the RingsHBO developing spin-offs of Game Of ThronesShowtime rebooting Dexter or Disney relaunching X Files by Jordan Peele (Get Out)…
Why does Tommy Shelby never eat anything in Peaky Blinders?
