Owen Wilson has swing in Stick, a feelgood comedy at Ted Lasso (Critique)
He embodies a former golf star who tries to become the mentor of a prodigy of the little white ball, in this new comforting series.
Eagle? Birdie? By ? Or Bogey? No need to be a golf expert to enjoy Stickthe new Apple series that has just released in streaming (also available on Canal+ in France).
A sweet comedy feelgood To comforting episodes, which tells the story of Pryce, ex-golf-golf that has lost everything. After farting on a Green during a major tournament, he put the clubs. His wife left him. And while he is about to lose his big luxury house and he no longer wants anything, Pryce meets a phenomenon: Santi, a 17 -year -old boy who strikes the little white ball like no one. A prodigy from a modest background, which Pryce will take under her wing to try to make it the champion of tomorrow.
As we note his blows on a “score card” over the 18 holes of a course, the authors of Stick Coche one by one all the boxes of the sports draom. The first ten episodes of this first season take place exactly as we could imagine. The old loser wakes up. He convinces the budding genius that he can get there. And they go on the roads together, overcoming obstacles and doubts, to finally put the ball at the bottom of the hole under the Hourras of the delirious crowd. It’s clear, Stick advances on a marked route.
But the series has the merit of never going out with each hole. She advances at a pleasant pace (the episodes are 30 minutes), around a very friendly little band, which we simply want to follow, to love. The comparison with Ted Lasso (or even with the beginnings of COBRA KAI) is obvious, to the point of curling opportunism.
Difficult to resist the quiet charm of Stickembodied by the unchanging Owen Wilsonwhich lugs its impassive pout, straight out of a film by Wes Anderson, on the greens of this comedy with a soft and enveloping atmosphere. He excels once again to play endearing and imperfect men, without ever switching to a hollow form of fantasy. Stick Even succeeded in intelligently looking into the difficulty of the witness to the new generation from the Gen Z.
A pleasant sporting walk where emotion is meticulously distilled. We may not be on an Eagle, but Owen Wilson Undoubtedly put for the birdie.
Stick, on Apple TV+ and Canal+ in France, from June 5, 2025.
