Paul Schrader pays for Joker: Folie à deux, “a very bad musical”

The director’s viper tongue strikes again.

The immense screenwriter (Taxi Driver, Mosquito Coast…) and director (Mishima, On the Path to Redemption, The Card Counter, Master Gardener…) Paul Schrader is also known for its tongue-less projections. Whether on his Facebook account or in interviews with the press, the filmmaker rarely hesitates to say what he thinks.

In view of the upcoming release of Oh, Canadahis new film screened at the Cannes Film Festival, the magazine Interview asked him for his opinion on Joker: Folie à deux. The answer is obviously as tasty as it is scathing:

I saw 10 or 15 minutes of it. I left, bought something, came back and watched another 10 minutes. It was enough.

He describes Todd Phillips’ feature film as “very bad musical“, and takes the opportunity to tailor a suit to Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix: “I don’t like either of these people. I don’t like them as actors. I don’t like them so much as characters. I don’t like the whole thing. If these people came to your house, you would run out the back door.” Those interested will appreciate it.

Let us remember that Joker: Folie à deux is having a hard time finding a place at the global box office (find the review from Première here), and that this sequel could cause Warner Bros. to lose more than 100 million dollars. The first Jokernotably inspired by Taxi Driverhad grossed more than a billion dollars.

The actor behind the Joker 2 twist comes out of silence: “I’ve kept it a secret for two years”
