Prime Video subscription will increase in 2024
Prime Video is following the movement of other streaming platforms and is revising its prices upwards.
Aware of their success, but also of the fragility of their model, the streaming leaders revised their packages upwards before the new year. After Netflix, Apple TV+ and Disney+, it is now Prime Video’s turn to increase its package for the year 2024.
For now, this announcement only concerns American subscribers. According to the specialized media The Verge, the subscription will no longer cost $14.99 but $17.98 per month. It will be possible to escape this increase by agreeing to see advertisements. The change will take effect from January 29, 2024.”This will allow us to continue investing in engaging content and increase this investment over a long period of time.” Amazon announced to its customers.
This change currently concerns the United States, but the arrival of advertising will soon be relevant for the French market, as Amazon France announced last September (via BFM Tech&Co). This will be sometime in 2024, but the exact date remains to be specified.
Prime Video is just falling in line with its competitors’ new plans, announced just before the new year. It was Netflix which started the hostilities, from October 19, by modifying the “Essential” and “Premium” offers (+ 2 euros per month, or respectively 10.99 and 19.99 euros). Which is equivalent to a 67% increase in the Premium subscription since the arrival of the red N platform in 2014 in France.
At the end of October, Apple TV+ followed suit by inflating the bill. The platform has doubled the price of the subscription since its launch in 2019. From now on, you have to pay €9.99 per month (i.e. 3 euros more) to benefit from their quality catalog.
On November 1, Disney+ followed suit by launching an offer including advertisements (at €5.99/month) as well as a new Premium package (€11.99/month), including better image resolution (up to ‘at 4K), from Dolby Atmos and the possibility of using 4 screens simultaneously.
