Ray Gunn trailer: Brad Bird reveals his new retro-futuristic world

The filmmaker who also directed George Clooney in In pursuit of tomorrow (2015) and Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible : Ghost Protocoltries its hand at a new genre, a mix of film noir, science fiction and a retro aesthetic. The trailer for Ray Gunn takes us to Metropia, a futuristic megalopolis imagined as if the year 1939 had never ended.
“In Metropia, a sprawling city in an alternate future seen from the year 1939, private detective Raymond Gunn is drawn into a case involving aliens, murderers and a media star named Venus Nova…” details the synopsis.
Sam Rockwell lends his voice to Raymond Gunn, this private detective embarked on an investigation which will quickly exceed the boundaries of reason. Venus Nova is voiced by Scarlett Johansson.
The director recently told us, at the Annecy festival, that he wanted to move away from franchises a little and believes that the studios “should consider original films as research and development. You can’t just have twenty ideas, and that’s it. There must be room for something else. Studios should start taking big risks again and betting on new ideas, because that’s how the franchises of tomorrow are born.”
Ray Gunn will be available on Netflix on December 18.
