Record takeoff for Ryan Gosling and Last Chance Project at the US box office
The sci-fi film starring Ryan Gosling crushes everything in its path and marks the best start of the year in the United States.
His head is in the stars tonight!
Ryan Gosling achieves one of the greatest hits of his career with Last Chance Project (Project Hail Mary), produced by Amazon MGM Studios. The science fiction film directed by the duo Phil Lord & Christopher Miller starts with an impressive $80.5 million at the American box office.
A colossal score, which quite simply makes it the best start of 2026 across the Atlantic, ahead of Scream 7 (63 million in February).
Driven by premium formats (IMAX and PLF) with higher ticket prices, the film benefited from a massive boost: these screenings represent 56% of the weekend’s revenue, including nearly 24% for IMAX alone.
Suddenly, more than just a box, this Last Chance Project breaks quite a few records in its path:
- 2nd best start in history for a non-franchise film, just behind Oppenheimer ($82.4 million)
- Best launch for an original film in March, ahead of Us ($71 million)
- Biggest start ever for an Amazon MGM Studios film ahead Creed 3 (58 million)
- Personal best for Lord & Miller, ahead The Great Lego Adventure ($69 million)
- Second best start of Ryan Gosling’s career, behind barbie ($162 million)
Behind this steamroller, the surprise comes from Dhurandhar: The Revengewhich could sign the best North American start for an Indian film.
With an estimate of around $10 million, the Hindi film is on track to surpass Pathaan ($6.9M over 3 days, $9.5M over 5 days).
On the other hand, it’s a cold shower for Ready or Not 2. The horror film produced by Searchlight Pictures only grossed $9 million in its first weekend.
Despite an attractive cast – Sarah Michelle Gellar, Elijah Wood, Kathryn Newton – the sequel fails to transform the attempt of the first film, released in 2019, which opened to 8 million before ending its run at 57 million worldwide.
Finally, Jumpers continues its beautiful journey. Supported by wide distribution (3,675 theaters), the new Pixar rakes in another 18 million (-28%) this weekend.
Its total has now reached $121 million after three weeks of North American operation, almost double that of Elio last year at the end of his career (72 million in North America).
