Ryan Reynolds makes his comeback with Mayday: trailer

Two years after “Deadpool & Wolverine”, the Canadian actor leads a new spy adventure for Apple TV.

Ryan Reynolds has been discreet on our screens for a while.

Two years after the immense success of Deadpool & Wolverinewhich exceeded a billion dollars at the worldwide box office, the Canadian actor returns to headline Maydayan action spy comedy set in the middle of the Cold War. Before finding the superhero costume in Avengers: Doomsday at the end of the year, he took a lighter break alongside Kenneth Branagh.

Directed, written and produced by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein – already behind Dungeons and Dragons: Thieves’ Honor And Game Night – this film mixes humor, action and spy thriller in the purest tradition of buddy movies.

Ryan Reynolds plays Troy “Assassin” Kelly, a US Navy lieutenant sent on a secret mission to Soviet territory. When the operation turns into a fiasco, he finds himself isolated behind enemy lines. Captured by Nikolai Ustinov (Kenneth Branagh), a former KGB agent as gruff as he is fascinated by American culture, Troy thinks his last hour has arrived. But the strange duo will gradually learn to trust each other in an adventure that could well change their destiny.

The directors explain their approach: “The buddy movies of the 80s were a curious and tasty mix of humor, danger and authenticity. ‘Mayday’ is our homage to the genre, featuring the unlikely duo of Ryan Reynolds and Sir Kenneth Branagh. Against the backdrop of the Cold War, this adventure raises the question of patriotism but above all of what it means to be human.

The trailer promises a cocktail of chases, scathing lines and absurd situations carried by the alchemy between the two actors.

Mayday will be available for streaming in France from September 4 on Apple TV.
