Sabrina Carpenter to play Tom Holland’s Ginger Rogers in Fred Astaire biopic

Tom Holland has found his dance partners for the film which will begin filming early next year.

Tom Holland has found his dance partner for the biopoc devoted to Fred Astaire: it is the pop star, Sabrina Carpenter, who was chosen to play Ginger Rogers opposite the actor of Spider-Man.

The film, as yet untitled, will be directed by Paul King (Paddington, Wonka) and produced by Amy Pascal.

At their side, Margaret Qualley (Maid, The Substance) will play her older sister, Adele Astaire. On stage, Fred and Adele were big stars of Broadway and London’s West End, before Fred became one of the biggest stars of cinema, notably thanks to his famous numbers with Ginger Rogers, as in The Dancer Above (1935) where the couple performs the number “Cheek to Cheek” which has remained in the annals of the 7th art.

Note that Margaret Qualley co-starred this year in Sabrina Carpenter’s “House Tour” video, which they even co-directed together.

“I am delighted and honored to be entrusted with the task of bringing to the big screen the story of Fred Astaire and his first dancing partner – his big sister Adele“, Paul King said. “Fred left a timeless legacy in the field of dance in cinema, notably through his collaborations with Ginger Rogers, while Adele’s work has fallen into obscurity. There are no images of his dance performances. The cinematic challenge of bringing these 20th century icons to life is something I couldn’t have imagined without Tom Holland, Margaret Qualley and Sabrina Carpenter at my side.“

The screenplay is by Paul King and Steven Levenson, based on the book The Astaires: Fred & Adele by Kathleen Riley, who also acts as a consultant on the script and story.

Fred Astaire’s daughter, Ava Astaire McKenzie, and his son Tyler McKenzie, consultant and co-producer of the film, also gave their support to the project, delighted “to support this enterprise that celebrates the extraordinary careers and enduring legacies of my father and aunt, who were among the greatest musical theater stars of their time” said Ava Astaire McKenzie. With the extraordinary filmmaking team assembled around director Paul King, screenwriter Steven Levenson, producer Amy Pascal and Tom Holland, I know their legacy will be beautifully brought to the screen for a whole new generation.”

In addition to playing Fred Astaire, Tom Holland will also produce the film which will begin filming in early 2027. No release date yet.
