Sam Raimi will adapt a Roblox game into a film for the cinema
The director of Spider-Man and Evil Dead is teaming up with Josh Cooley, the filmmaker behind Toy Story 4, to bring 99 Nights in the Forest to the big screen.
After superheroes and horror films, Sam Raimi is tackling a phenomenon from Roblox.
20th Century Studios has just obtained the rights to adapt it for cinema 99 nights in the foresta horrific survival game launched in 2025 and in just a few months became one of the biggest hits on the platform. The screenplay will be written by Josh Cooley, while Raimi and his faithful partner Rob Tapert will produce the film for Ghost House Pictures.
Be careful though: Sam Raimi will not direct the film. No director is yet attached to the project, and no casting has been announced at this stage. 20th Century Studios had organized a call for projects from several screenwriters before accepting Josh Cooley’s proposal.
The game 99 nights in the forest immerses players in a haunted forest where they must survive for 99 nights, build their camp and above all find four missing children. But the woods are far from deserted: a worrying deer and other hostile creatures regularly complicate their mission.
A concept particularly conducive to horror cinema for Sam Raimi, who made himself known with the trilogy evil Dead before making the trilogy Spider-Man with Tobey Maguire. Most recently he was behind the camera of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and thriller Send Help.
For his part, Josh Cooley comes from animation. He notably participated in the writing of Vice Versa at Pixar, which earned him an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay, before directing Toy Story 4won the Oscar for best animated film. He then signed Transformers One in 2024.
And 99 nights in the forest is clearly not a confidential game. Released in 2025, it has already become the seventh most played game in Roblox history, with nearly 26 billion visits recorded in spring 2026 and a satisfaction rating of 90.6%.
Above all, the project marks a first for 20th Century Studios, which is tackling here for the first time the feature film adaptation of a video game.
For the moment, no release date has been announced.
