Spike teases his return in the new Buffy the Vampire Slayer series

James Marsters lets slip that he has been contacted to reappear on the Sunnydale side…

While speculation is rife about the characters from the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer series expected to return in the revival in preparation, James Marsters, the unforgettable interpreter of William “Spike” Pratt, may have let slip a clue about his involvement in New Sunnydale.

Guest on the podcast The B—- Is Back, during a discussion with his former playing partner Charisma Carpenter, the 63-year-old actor confided that the discussions around the revival had pushed him to dive back into the original series.

“It’s quite funny. At first, I watched like everyone else, to see what we looked like on screen. Then I didn’t watch the series again for a very long time,” explains James Marsters. “Recently, I rewatched it entirely because of this whole reboot thing. I had to go back into the episodes to ask myself: ‘Can you play this character again? Forget the outward appearance. Can you, internally, find this psychology of Spike?’

A reflection interrupted by Charisma Carpenter, who did not fail to trap him live: had he just admitted Spike’s return to New Sunnydale?

“No. Not at all,” he responds immediately, smiling. “I don’t know…. What can I say? There is an interest in bringing me back, it’s true…”

The actor immediately confided:

“If I were producing a reboot, I wouldn’t be called right away… We would first have to tell the origin story of the new Slayer, introduce her friends, set up this new world, and have them experience at least one adventure together before bringing back other characters — whether they are completely new or from the original series.

James Marsters has finally outlined a realistic timeline for Spike’s possible reappearance.

“I wouldn’t imagine being called up until, at the earliest, the end of season 1 — or even season 2,” he concludes. “I’d be surprised if I wasn’t called, but at the same time, I’d be surprised if I was called now…”

For now, the New Sunnydale series is still under development. Only the pilot was filmed. Disney has yet to give the green light to begin production.
