Star Wars: should we reboot the original trilogy? Matthew Vaughn is for it!
For the director of Kingsman, “Star Wars is the Skywalker family. And they have forgotten it a little…”
While he is about to release his James Bond moviewith Argylethe director of X-Men: First Class And Kingsman would he want to tackle Star Wars ? Matthew Vaughn was never officially asked by Lucasfilm to direct a film in the saga. And anyway, today, he would only accept on one condition: being able to reboot the original trilogy.
“For me, if I had to direct a film Star Wars, that would mean playing with the characters I love. If the studio tells me they want to reboot Star Wars, with Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Darth Vader, in a new version….Everyone would say it’s stupid, but I’d be excited to try! Why are (Star Wars) characters from 1977 so sacred? Why couldn’t we bring them back for a new audience?” insists the filmmaker in the Happy Sad Confused podcast.
He explains that if he had to put his hands in George Lucas’s Galaxy, that’s what he would do: “Everyone is going to get upset but that’s okay, let’s do it. If you want a new generation of fans, make the film for them. For the older generation, we’ll keep our fingers crossed and hope it’s successful enough to which she appreciates.”
In the argument of Matthew Vaughnthere is this idea that Lucasfilm and Disney have lost track of the essence of Star Wars from film to film. For him, the saga is only of interest if it follows the Skywalker family:
“Star Wars, it’s the Skywalker family and that’s where I think they went wrong. They forgot that! They’ve done a great job of adapting the franchise for television, but they need an epic new movie.”
For Matthew Vaughnthe latest variants of Star Wars hold more industrial content linked to modern markets: “Studios are like any art form. The music, cinema, fashion sectors… financing and commerce have taken precedence over creation. This always means that at the end of the day, for short term gains you succeed but in the long term you kill everything. This is what is currently happening in cinema, music, art. Commerce has taken over and now the pendulum is starting to swing back. Creativity should always be the driving force behind any decision and then you think about how to capitalize on it. If you try to make money from the start, you will kill big franchises.”
