Oscars 2024: Oppenheimer triumphs, Anatomy of a Fall wins a prize (complete list)
Christopher Nolan's film was the big winner of the 96th Academy Awards.
As expected, Oppenheimer crushed the Oscars 2024. Christopher Nolan's film won seven awards, including the most prestigious: best film, best director, best actor for Cillian Murphy and best supporting actor for Robert Downey Jr. Anatomy of a fall for its part won the Oscar for best original screenplay for Justine Triet and Arthur Harari.
Poor creatures is the other winner of the evening, with four Oscars including best actress for Emma Stone, who won against Lilly Gladstone. Which means that the Killers of the Flower Moon by Martin Scorsese left empty-handed. Just like the Maestro by Bradley Cooper. barbie save honor with the best song and The Area of Interest leaves with two trophies: the Oscar for best foreign film and best sound.
We have had more eventful Oscar ceremonies. The Oscar for best film wrongly announced for La La Land and actually handed over to Moonlight in 2017. The unexpected victory of Green Book in 2019. The Korean coronation of Parasite in 2020. CODA imposing itself in the face of Power of the Dog. Will Smith's slap to Chris Rock last year. 2024 will have been a year with almost no surprises. And unlike the Caesars, the evening was under total control and perfectly calibrated.
In Hollywood, we respect ad breaks, the sketches are politically correct, the speeches don't go overboard like Raphaël Quenard and we finish at the scheduled time. Only Jonathan Glazer and the Ukrainian director of the documentary 20 days in Mariupol dared to take a political break (on Gaza and the war in Ukraine). And the good words were brief like Nolan who thanked “the incredible Emma Thomas, producer of all our films, of all our children” receiving the Oscar for best film.
Even Justine Triet and Arthur Harari remained sober on stage for their statuette for best original screenplay under the gaze of the dog Messi. But we will still remember from these Oscars that they rewarded auteur or independent films, including in the visual effects category where Japanese production Godzilla Minus One imposed itself in the face of Mission: Impossible 7 And Guardians of the Galaxy 3 with its tiny budget of less than 15 million dollars.
“We live in an industry that doesn't want to take risks, but putting 200 million on a film is a risk.”“, said Cord Jefferson, winning the Oscar for best adapted screenplay for American Fiction (with Jeffrey Wright) opposite barbie. “Instead of making one film for 200 million, try making 20 films for 10 million or 50 films for 4 million“. That he may be heard.
The iconic moment of the evening will probably remain “I'm Just Ken” performed masterfully by Ryan Gosling (see the video below), who set the Dolby Theater in Los Angles on fire with Slash by Guns N' Roses. The actor of barbiewho had to lose to Robert Downey Jr. for best supporting role, exuded a feeling of infectious accomplishment, like his performance in Greta Gerwig's film.
