Starfleet Academy: the new Star Trek series will end (already) with season 2

Launched last January, the new series of the franchise will end in its second season, despite an ambitious launch.

End of mission, already, for the young guard of Star Trek.

The new series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will end with its season 2, the production announced today. A decision that comes just a few days after the season 1 finale was posted online on Paramount +.

Ordered in 2023 by the streaming platform, the series had nevertheless benefited from rare confidence: a season 2 had been validated even before the first was put online. It was launched in January and concluded on March 12, while the second season has just finished filming. In a joint press release, CBS Studios and Paramount+ welcome an ambitious series:

“We are extremely proud of the ambition, passion and creativity that went into bringing ‘Starfleet Academy’ to life. The series introduced a new generation of characters, while welcoming familiar faces, and expanded the Star Trek universe in exciting ways.”

Set after the events of Star Trek: Discovery in the 32nd century, the series follows the first class of students and teachers at a newly-relaunched Starfleet Academy, led by Holly Hunter.

Co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau paid tribute to the teams:

“It has been a joy and a privilege to bring Gene Roddenberry’s extraordinary vision to life, thanks to the hundreds of passionate people who bring their talents to this project every day, with imagination and respect. We are currently in post-production on what will be the second and final season. We are extremely proud of what we have accomplished together on this series, and audiences will be able to discover the work of these exceptional artists when season 2 airs. We will end on a high note.”

However, the Star Trek universe is not dying out. In addition to this final season 2, the franchise can still count on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Season 4 is expected later this year, while a fifth – announced as the last – has already finished filming. And then? What will become of the franchise? She could well take her place in the cinema again…
